Welcome to The Rotary Club of Blakely!
The greatest accomplishment of the Rotary Club of Blakely has been the purchase of 1000 acres of land in 1937, which was donated to the state of Georgia to become the Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park. The enthusiasm for the establishment of a state park began in 1936 after Mr. R. F. Burch, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Blakely. Rotary members were told a state park would be crated if Early County citizens would donate 1,000 acres of land, including the Indian mounds, to the State of Georgia. The Rotary Club was instrumental in getting donations totaling $12,000 to purchase approximately 1015 acres for the park. At the top of the list of donors were the Early County Board of Commissioners and the City Council of Blakely. In March 1938, the deed was delivered to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources by Mr. George Sparks, President of the Rotary Club of Blakely, Mr. S. G. Maddox, Sr., and Early County Sheriff Sid Howell. Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the park now known as Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park.

Happy Birthday!
I am honored to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Blakely for the 2010 – 2011 Rotary year. Organized in 1926, the Rotary Club of Blakely was Blakely’s first service club. The Blakely Rotary Club met on Thursdays in its first days, and still meets on Thursdays at noon at the Blakely Town and Country Club. I believe each of us join Rotary for various reasons which culminate in a joint mission to serve our community, our nation and ultimately the entire world. Each Rotarian brings with him/her tremendous talents, skills and most importantly, the desire to serve and to share in fellowship. Rotarians recognize that if our world is to become a better place, we must WORK TOGETHER to accomplish our goals; and we must PARTICIPATE and become a PART of the solution. It is my hope for this year that each Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Blakely will renew his/her commitment to the ideals of Rotary International and to communicate this message to others. As the Blakely Rotary Club celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2011, the Board is exploring some type of impactful project to celebrate this milestone. It is my earnest prayer that I will truly make a difference in the life of the Rotary Club of Blakely and in the lives of those I serve during 2010-2011.
